Flooding in Texas – What to Do Now?
Texas has been hammered with rain over the past several months with major flooding and storm damage in all of the major cities and surrounding areas, but the Central Texas area (Austin, Wimberley, Blanco, San Marcos) was hit especially hard. Damages range from leaky roofs and debris removal to flooded homes and cars and lingering mold. It could take weeks, months, or longer for some insurance claims to process and residents to fully recover.
Here are some steps to help you through the process:
Contact your insurance company immediately to inquire about coverage and the details associated with getting the claims process started. Because flood insurance and homeowners insurance are different, you’ll want to make sure you’re contacting the right agent to prevent delays. Flood insurance typically covers damage from water that was on the ground before damaging your home. Water from broken pipes, leaky roofs, and other areas inside the home is generally covered by homeowners insurance.
Chances are, your insurance company will be slammed with inquiries and it could take some time to get an adjustor out to survey your damage. Prior to cleaning up and throwing out, document the damage to the home and property with videos and/or photos to make sure everything is included. If you don’t already have a home inventory of damaged contents, make note of specific items that will be hard to remember once they are disposed of.
Often, your insurance agent will direct you to a reputable contractor for renovations and repairs, but some issues need immediate attention. Prior to hiring a contractor on your own, make sure to do your research, gathering references and/or checking with the Better Business Bureau for reliable servicemen. Massive storms often bring out scam artists and disreputable contractors to make a quick buck.
Make sure to verify that contractors specialize in the repair you need them for and that they are properly insured, so that you won’t be held liable for any injuries incurred while on your property. A signed contract for estimated expenses and the length of time it is expected to take is also a good idea.
